Falling the Thought of Circus, Chapter One - Online course - Day time - Group 1

'Falling - the thought of Circus' by John-Paul Zaccarini is a literary work of poetic theory and of circus philosophy, concerning the art of circus. As the abstract says "This work looks to its fundamental and disavowed romance with failure to show how progressive its thinking could be."

In this course we will spend 9 glorious mornings together to go through 'Chapter One' of this book and discuss its content. There is a structure, but we will create the discussion together, share and relate to our own experiences of the circus in practise. 

This course should be of great intrest to 'circus-thinkers' (circus theoriests) and open to those with extensive experience of performing arts practise intrested in concepts of transdisciplinary theory.

Session 4: Mon 27th of April - 9:00 - 10:30 am -  Circus as Death Writing 

Session 5: Mon 4th of May - 9:00 - 10:30 am - Trauma, Mania, Nostalgia 

Session 6: Tuesday 12th of May - 9:00 - 10:30 am -  Auto-reflection 

Session 7:  Monday 18th of May - 9:00 - 10:30 am - Circus as poem 

Session 8: Friday 29th of May - 9:00 - 10:30 am Concluding session, writing about practise - observe the different weekday

Session 9: Tuesday 2nd of June - 9:00 - 10:30 am - Writing session sharing 

The course is free, but you need a membership to Cirkus Syd to join. For this course we are trialling a new type of membership where you can get membership for only the months where you attend the course. Monthly membership is 110kr. The course runs across April and May = 220SEK - Go to membership

Abstract [en]

Sex, death, seduction, trauma and an intimate yet distanced relationship to an amorous other: circus and psychoanalysis have much in common. This book looks to the story circus tells when it is on the couch; a love story of impossible desires, improbable fantasies deeply indebted to masochism and utopian longing. However, trapped as it is in its conservative and narcissistic aesthetics of infatuation – stunning, erotic and impressive – its queer core of anti-normative and anarchic desire has been co-opted as the poster-child for neoliberal success. This work looks to its fundamental and disavowed romance with failure to show how progressive its thinking could be.
